illy Barista Training by SIMDI: Perfecting the art of making the perfect cup

SIMDI, the authorised distributor of illy in the Maldives, conducted a barista training programme for its team members and three resorts. As the authorised dealer of the Italian brand, SIMDI takes special care to keep its team and clients in touch with the brand and its history, ultimately to serve the blend at its finest.

The trainings were facilitated by Stefanie Avon, a professor at Illy Università del Caffè, who believed that the sessions were a learning opportunity for her as well. Having worked at illy for over five years, she personally creates and conducts new projects. Stefanie has previously carried out coffee training for professionals at café UDC China.

The training sessions which lasted for two to three hours, consisted of modules such as espresso and cappuccino preparation, equipment maintenance and quality, daily schedule of the barista; product use, grinder setting, extraction, adjustments, milk frothing and equipment maintenance.

SIMDI views it important that baristas maintain the quality of coffee up to the standard of illy in order to satisfy guests. The key focus of the trainings for SIMDIs team was to improve the knowledge about the product as well as promoting upcoming products of illy to the market. The training also included practical sessions on coffee making.

Apart from the head office staff, the sessions were also held at Milaidhoo Island Maldives, One&Only Reethi Rah and Jumeirah Vittaveli. The trainings were received by eager and excited staff who believed that the sessions helped them improve their skills in preparing the perfect cup of illy coffee. illy coffee has only one blend that is well known for its unique taste and maintained quality. With 86 years of experience, the producers of illy are more rigid in their efforts to ensure the quality of the product.

86 years of experience has aided in ensuring the consistency of the taste of the illy coffee blend. illy coffee goes through staged production in labs, regulated by professionals, with correct equipment to be finally sealed in a flawless packaging. The guaranteed quality of the blend has led it to dominate the upper market resorts.

Similar training sessions have been held at illy’s Università del Caffè campuses as well as in Malé, with barista trainers from illy’s Università del Caffè, occasionally, over the past years. There are plans to carry out similar trainings in the future. The continuation of this tradition of knowledge enhancing and getting familiar with the brand shows the commitment of SIMDI as the authorised distributor of the brand.
